Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Joseph Albasu Kunini PhD, has expressed the readiness of the State House of Assembly to partner with the authorities of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme towards the security and welfare of the corps members posted to the State for their national service.
The Speaker who made the pledge on Wednesday, 21st October, 2020 when the management staff of the NYSC, led by the State Coordinator, David Pwanidi Markson, paid a familiarization visit to the State House of Assembly.
According to him, the essence of the NYSC scheme is to promote national integration amongst the youth in the country, hence the Taraba State government, under the leadership of Arc Darius Dickson Ishaku, will ensure the safety and welfare of the corps members, especially those posted to serve in the riverine and volatile areas in the State.
He cited instances how he and his colleagues in the State House of Assembly assisted some corps members posted in their constituencies for primary assignments.
The Speaker then commended the present crop of NYSC members for meritorious performance and diligence in the discharge of their primary assignments in the State.
“We are building a template to guide corps members posted to riverine and volatile areas to ensure their safety during their national service in the State; Taraba State government is ready to partner with the authorities of the NYSC,” he said.
He further declared that the doors of his office are always open for the management staff, just as he stressed, “we offer our hands of fellowship to you.”
Earlier, in his speech, the State Coordinator commended the Speaker and his colleagues for their kind gestures towards the NYSC scheme in the State, citing several projects and provision of life saving items, especially life jackets and other safety measures for the corps members serving in riverine communities in the State.
“Honourable Speaker, sir, permit me to use this opportunity to express my profound gratitude and thanks to all the Honourable members of this assembly over the personal presence of the Honourable Speaker and Deputy Speaker recently when we presented COVID-19 Prevention items to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Arc Darius Dickson Ishaku at Government House, Jalingo.
“It was a clear demonstration of the seriousness and commitment of the Honourable members of the House to the health and welfare of the people,” he stated.
The State Coordinator then made passionate appeal to the Speaker and the honourable members to strength the existing synergies between the State House of Assembly and the NYSC scheme in the State, especially in the following areas:
- Improve on the construction of more Corps lodges in their constituencies;
- Improve on welfare packages for Corps members serving in their constituencies;
- Improve on the provision of life jackets to corps members serving in riverine communities for safety purpose;
- Motivate corps members carrying out group and individuals community development service projects in their constituencies;
- Sponsoring of some of NYSC’s social and sporting activities during orientation course and improvement of camp facilities.
The Coordinator also made presentation of some publications on the NYSC scheme to the Speaker.
