Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joseph Albasu Kunini, PhD has warned that henceforth rapists and violators of other social norms will face the full wrath of the law in the State.
The Speaker made the declaration on Wednesday, 24th February, 2021 after the passage of “The Taraba State Violence and Discrimination Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill, 2021” to law by the State House of Assembly.
The Speaker who is the sole sponsor of the Bill described its passage to law as revolutionary, just as he thanked his colleagues for their doggedness to ensure that it sailed through the legislative process, so that Tarabans go to sleep.
“I thank my colleagues for their doggedness for the people to go to sleep.
“Henceforth, anybody found guilty of rape and other social crimes will face the full wrath of the law.
“This is a revolution in Taraba State,” he said.
The Taraba State Violence and Discrimination Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill, 2021 is the domestication of the “Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act, 2015” which sought to eliminate all forms of violence against persons both in private and public in the country.
The Public Hearing on the Bill, chaired by a former Speaker and Member representing Takum II, Rt.Hon. Dr. Mark Bako Useni, attracted many stakeholders who commended the Speaker for taking the bulls by its horns by sponsoring the domestication of the VAPP ACT, 2015.
The First Lady of Taraba State, Barr. Mrs. Anna Dickson Ishaku and founder of Hope Afresh Foundation Taraba, who led the stakeholders to the Public Hearing decried the surge in rape cases in the State, describing it as endemic, hence she called on the state governors to declare State of Emergency on rape in the country.
